7th Graders Make Mars Discovery

In Inspirational, Upholding high standards, Who is wearing the pants? on June 22, 2010 at 3:29 pm

Education is most effective when it’s exciting.  The 7th graders at Evergreen Middle School in California definitely had an exciting experience.  While participating in the Mars Student Imaging Program at the Mars Space Flight Facility at Arizona State University, Dennis Mitchell’s class discovered a cave on Mars that had previously gone unnoticed by space professionals.  The cave is like a skylight in one of the lava tunnels on Mars.  I imagine those students are proud of their achievement – as they should be.

Best. Gift. Ever.

In Ingenious idea, Inspirational, Thinking Outside the Box, Who is wearing the pants? on June 13, 2010 at 4:47 am

Edgar Jusino knew that he was going to miss the high school graduation of his daughter, Chelsea, but he had an idea that might just be the best graduation gift ever.  Last December, before heading off for his second tour of duty in the Middle East, Edgar used the school’s audio/video equipment to create a message for the graduating class, and especially, for Chelsea.  As the graduating class sat through the ceremony in a baseball field this month, Edgar’s video appeared on the JumboTron.  Chelsea was surprised and cried tears of happiness upon seeing her father and hearing his message.  Edgar Jusino, you are wearing the pants.

Bethany Fenton

Bethany Fenton (seated, left) backstage at 'Britain's Got Talent'. (The Sun)

Many people think that Simon Cowell is rude – even cruel – to the people he judges on American Idol and Britain’s Got Talent.  Simon showed his softer side when he granted five-year-old Bethany Fenton’s dying wish to sing “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” to him.  Meeting Simon and finalists on Britain’s Got Talent “was the highlight of Bethany’s short life.”  She died three days later from an inoperable brain tumor.

Foul Ball Causes Fair Play

In Inspirational, Upholding high standards, Who is wearing the pants? on June 7, 2010 at 9:02 pm

Ten-year-old Ethan Edelman, like most kids, hoped to leave the ball game with a souvenir baseball.  Ethan thought he was going to get his wish when Mets’ third baseman, David Wright, tossed a foul ball to his open glove.  Unfortunately, Mike Terry snagged the ball.  The crowd booed, but Mike had no idea that there was a kid behind him; he had given the ball to his 3-year-old and 5-year-old sons.  The third base umpire tossed another foul ball to Ethan, yet the crowd was not appeased.  Mike, realizing why the crowd was angry, took the ball from his sons and handed it over to Ethan.  Enter David Wright into the drama.  He brought two more balls out to give to Mike’s young sons, as they deserved the foul balls just as much as Ethan.  In the end, no one left the ball park unhappy.
