Bearly Hurt

In Bravery, Commanding respect, Who is wearing the pants? on June 16, 2010 at 3:20 am

Sean Berkey was riding his bike to work in Anchorage, Alaska when he came upon a mother bear with her cub on the bike trail.  The pediatric pharmacist played dead, an appropriate response when attacked by this type of bear.  Sean ended up with minor injuries, including a bite on his leg.  Knowing what to do may have saved his life and certainly limited his injuries.

Sister Lynn Rettinger, principal of Sacred Heart Elementary School, has perfected her stern reprimand after almost 50 years within the Catholic school system.  In fact, her tone is so flawless that she was able to foil a would-be robber, while armed only with her words.  After seeing a man lift a wallet through an open window of a parked car, Sister Lynn approached him and told him, “Give me what you have.”  The man handed her the wallet, apologized, and left.

Sister Lynn Rettinger commands respect with only her voice; therefore, she wears the pants.

Turning Fantasy Into Reality

Balloon flight

Jonathan Trappe cut the balloons to descend (Photo Ian Hadingham)

Haven’t we all imagined flying high above beautiful scenery, drifting along the breeze in a chair suspended by helium balloons?  It’s an age-old daydream, brought to the big screen in the movie Up!

American Jonathan Trappe made that fantasy a reality with a lovely balloon ride which began near Ashford, Kent, crossed the English Channel, and touched down in a cabbage field in France.

Jonathan surprised French officials, but had all the right paperwork and even gave compensation to the cabbage farmer for any damage to his field.

Jonathan described the reason behind his adventure as “just this wonderful fantasy of grabbing on to toy balloons and floating into open space.”  He wears the pants today for doing what many just dream about… for doing something totally wild simply for the shear pleasure of having done it.

12-year-old McKenzie Hughes

12-year-old McKenzie Hughes later met the 911 dispatcher who helped her during the burglary.

Twelve-year-old McKenzie Hughes was home alone when burglars entered her home.  She called 911 and hid under the covers, describing the intruders and their car to the 911 operator while waiting for the police to arrive.  At one point, the burglars entered the room where she hid.  McKenzie’s call and tips helped catch the would-be thieves, who tried to run when they heard police sirens approaching.

Happily Ever After Does Exist

Ally Smith & Mike Babineaux

Mike Babineaux & Ally Smith

In the spring of 2007, Ally Smith had the scare of her life. After minor fainting episodes, testing showed that she had heart muscle disease or viral cardiomyopathy. Her chance of surviving a year was only 50%. Ally began a regime of exhausting therapy and in September of 2008, her long-time boyfriend, Mike Babineaux proposed. She accepted, but a week later, her organs began failing. She tried to return the ring. She didn’t want to tie him down, knowing the difficulties her life would include, if she lived at all. Mike, however, knew that “no one in [his] life could replace her,” and refused to take the ring back. Luckily, Ally pulled through and underwent surgery that placed a pump next to her heart that works for it. Ally and Mike will marry next month, something Ally never thought she’d live to experience. Fairy tale endings still exist.

Ally exhibited bravery in the face of death. Mike stayed dedicated to his true love through adversity not normally experienced by those young in love. Both should wear the pants today.

Good employees are hard to find and often difficult to judge by applications and resumes. But Denny’s found that they had an employee worth keeping through an unusual – and scary – situation. Three armed robbers entered the Denny’s in Winter Springs, Florida, took money and cell phones from customers and employees alike, and ushered everyone into a cooler. The Denny’s cook slipped his cell phone into his pocket, calmed patrons, and called 911 to report the robbery. This guy is wearing the pants, and I, for one, think he deserves a raise.

A 16-year-old Hero

In Bravery, Inspirational, Uncategorized, Who is wearing the pants? on May 19, 2010 at 12:39 am

At age 16, most kids are getting their driving permits and learning to drive the family car by themselves. Not Jessica Watson. Jessica, age 16, just completed sailing around the world – alone. The Australian sailed her yacht 23,000 nautical miles and into Sydney Harbor and was deemed a national hero by Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. Ironically, Jessica does not have her driver’s license yet.

One man, one marathon

In Bravery, Inspirational, Who is wearing the pants? on May 14, 2010 at 11:59 pm

Nick Roumonada runs in marathons, plays on a basketball team, and runs more in a week than some do in a lifetime.  But Nick isn’t like other athletes.  At the age of 13, he lost a leg when he contracted spinal meningitis.  With the support of family and friends, Nick continued playing basketball and found he could do a lot more.  He’s a New York Rollin’ Knicks player – a wheelchair basketball team sponsored by the NBA’s Knicks.  In July, Nick will push himself even further with the New York City Marathon, which involves a mile-long swim in the Hudson, 25 miles of biking, and a six-mile run through Central Park.  Nick should be an inspiration to those without disabilities, and for that reason, Nick Roumonada is wearing the pants.

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine as children do. It’s not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And as we let our own lights shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

Superheroes do exist

In Bravery, Who is wearing the pants? on May 1, 2010 at 8:07 pm

Erik Martin, AKA Electron Boy, is wearing the pants today.*  Erik, age 13, has liver cancer.  The Make-A-Wish Foundation (which also wears the pants) granted Erik’s wish to be a superhero.  Last Thursday, Erik received a call from Spiderman.  “Dr. Dark” and “Blackout Boy” – played by Edgar Hansen and Jake Anderson of Discovery Channel’s “Deadliest Catch” – were wreaking havoc on the city, and only Electron Boy could help.  Hundreds of people helped make this wish come true, including the Seattle Sounders, the Bellevue Police Department and King County and Snohomish sheriff’s offices, over 250 employees of Puget Sound Electric, dozens of people at the Space Needle, and Seattle City Councilwoman, Sally Bagshaw.  After Erik saved the day, he was given a key to the city and a day honoring his superhero persona.  The boy was clearly affected by day’s events, but said little more than, “This is the best day of my life.”
